Who is a true Muslim? On the sacred day when our brothers and sisters in Islam celebrate Bakrid, the festival of sacrifice, Bhagawan lovingly answers this important question for us all.

In the Quran, salat and zakat are the two eyes. Salat means prayer; zakat means charity. Those who regard charity as a sacred duty and elevate their consciousness through prayer and constant meditation on God are Muslims. Islam is a word that denotes not a particular religion, but a state of mind—a state of complete devotion to the Will of God. Islam means devotion, humility, peace, and tranquility. Islam denotes a social community whose members have attained supreme peace through devotion to the All-Merciful, Almighty God and have vowed to live in peace with their fellow human beings. Later, this word came to be applied to communities that regarded themselves as separate and distinct, and therefore hostile to the rest. Islam taught something higher. It directed attention to the One in the Many, Unity in Diversity, and led people to the Reality called God.
— Divine Discourse, July 12, 1983

Islam teaches that God’s Grace can be earned through justice and righteous living; wealth, scholarship, and power will not help in this.

From heart to heart, India lives,

From color to color, space is filled.

In cheerful chaos, constancy of order,

And the Himalayas’ eternal colors drink their fill.

Here, everything is love, and gods upon the Earth,

And while the soul is purified, the body burns with fever.

And the heart longs to be incredibly brave,

Cherishing thoughts of You...

Do not expect good to come to you from bad deeds. But if you have done a good deed, live without fear.

When you plant a lemon seed in the ground, only a lemon tree can grow from it. All forms of life and all religions belong to the Lord. He is present in every form that you worship. Countless beings inhabit the infinite Universe, but the most perfect of them is the human being. Like all other beings, humans eat and sleep, and so on, but two qualities distinguish them from others: dharma, which implies righteous conduct, and jnana, divine wisdom. If these qualities are absent in a person, they are no different from other living beings.

First and foremost, one should understand the nature of dharma. Dharma teaches standards of conduct and principles of interaction through which a person can achieve spiritual and social development. Observing these principles is called dharmic conduct. However, dharma also punishes those who tend to obstruct it or contribute to deviation from it. Dharma protects those who uphold it. It brings victory to those who follow its principles. Dharma exists at all times, and it is the same for everyone. Through it, the innermost meaning of the Spirit is revealed.

Dharma is that which comes from the heart in the form of pure, elevated ideas and is realized through righteous conduct. Its essence can be briefly expressed in these words: treat others as you want them to treat you.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba, “Summer Showers in Brindavan 1973,” Chapter 22, The True Nature of Dharma

For anyone who has not read them yet, I recommend Michael Newton’s two books, “Journey of Souls” and “Destiny of Souls.” I read them in one sitting; it felt as though I was remembering and had long known everything described in them.

Michael Newton was a hypnotherapist whose research into past-life regression and the space between lives gave millions of people access to a deeper understanding of the nature of the soul. His books are not merely descriptions of hypnosis sessions; they are a map of the invisible world, where every soul has its origin, path, tasks, and spiritual guides.

🌀 What are the books about?
• “Journey of Souls” is the first book to compile real cases of Newton’s clients who experienced deep hypnotic regression. Through their experiences, we learn what happens after death, how the soul leaves the body, how it meets its guides, returns to its “spiritual family,” reviews the life it has lived, and prepares for its next incarnation.

• “Destiny of Souls” is the second book, deeper and more philosophical. In it, Newton reveals the nuances of the soul’s tasks, the differences between “young,” “mature,” and “old” souls, and the specifics of choosing bodies, families, challenges, and even contracts between souls.

After reading them, one’s perception of life and death changes. There is more acceptance, patience, and a desire to understand one’s mission more deeply. The fear of death disappears, replaced by the understanding that we are eternal and that each incarnation is part of a greater design.

What should be the source of our confidence and courage? Bhagawan inspires us today with an example from history.

Many of you may have read the story of Abraham Lincoln, who lived in poverty during his student years. While other boys went to school in expensive clothes, Lincoln could not afford even decent clothing when he went to school. One day, his friends mocked and humiliated him. He came home in tears and told his mother how they had insulted and humiliated him. His mother consoled him, saying: “My dear son, do not be swayed by praise or blame. Develop self-confidence. Have firm faith in God. Then everything will be good for you.” These words made an indelible impression on Lincoln’s tender heart. He gained self-confidence with the support of his mother. Ultimately, he attained the position of President of America. Nothing is impossible in this world for a person with self-confidence and courage. He can achieve anything and everything. Therefore, strengthen your self-confidence. Do not worry about what others say. Do not be afraid even if they laugh at you. Why should you be afraid when God is with you? He is the indweller of your heart.
— Divine Discourse, February 14, 2009

What makes Divinity shine in a person? Bhagawan lovingly explains with several beautiful examples!

A person must constantly perform good deeds in daily life. As the proverb says: “If you keep singing, you will be able to sing well; if you keep chewing neem leaves, even they will taste sweet; if you keep rubbing a stone, it will become smaller.” The value of a diamond increases after it is polished and cut. Similarly, Divinity manifests in a person after they have gone through trials and tribulations and with constant practice. Fire is produced when two pieces of wood are rubbed against each other. Soft butter is obtained by churning cream. Similarly, a person can attain Divinity by constantly thinking of God. It is said that the more you rub a sandalwood stick against a stone, the more fragrant it becomes. If sugarcane is crushed thoroughly, it yields only sweet juice. When gold is placed in the fire, it sheds all its impurities and shines brightly. Similarly, a spiritual seeker must face all problems and difficulties, develop the spirit of renunciation and sacrifice, and experience Divinity!
— Divine Discourse, April 26, 1993

I give you trials not as punishment or because I like to trouble you, but simply to give you the joy of overcoming them!

Whenever Dharma declines and Adharma grows, I incarnate on earth.) God incarnates in order to teach humanity Dharma (righteousness) and raise it to the divine level. Therefore, Dharma itself assumes human form. Devotion is the most important thing in a person's life. Unwavering love for God is true Bhakti (devotion). But people spend their lives loving external worldly objects. Worldly love is not true love. It is mere attachment, not love. Only love for God is true love. Deep love for God is true devotion. The outpouring of Prema (love) is Dharma. One who understands Dharma will develop Prema. A person who develops love for God can easily follow Dharma. Dharma and Prema are twins. But people today have lost both these qualities. Life without Dharma and Prema is barren, like a desert.

Everyone in this world loves someone. However, there are differences in such love. Students love their fellow students. Bodies love other bodies. God is present in this body as well as in the other. Both are embodiments of divinity. The one God is present in all bodies. We should love everyone. Love all, serve all, because God is present in everyone. There is no place in the universe where God is absent. God is present in the sky, in water, in sound, and in light. Thus, everything in this universe is an embodiment of divinity. We turn away from this all-pervading divinity and worship God in the form of an idol in a temple. Without a doubt, you may worship these idols. There is nothing wrong with that. But you must realize the truth that the same God who is in this idol is present in every person—indeed, in every living being. I am not saying that worshipping these idols is wrong. But you yourselves are God. First consider yourselves God, and then begin to see the same God in every living being.

Krishna says to Arjuna: “Simply be in a state of allowing.” Tell existence: “Use me as you see fit. I am available, available without conditions.” Then whatever happens through you will possess great authenticity. There will be intensity, there will be depth, there will be the imprint of eternity.

Jesus says: remember—those who are first in this world will be last in the Kingdom of God, and the last will be first. He gave you a fundamental law… he gave you an inexhaustible, eternal law: stop striving to be first.

But remember one thing—this is very important, because the mind is so cunning that it can distort any truth… You may begin trying to be last—but then you will miss the whole point. Then another competition will arise: “I must be last”—and if someone else declares themselves to be last, the struggle begins again, the conflict begins again.

I heard a Sufi parable:

The great emperor Nadir Shah was praying. It was early morning, the sun had not yet risen, and it was still dark. Nadir Shah was preparing to set out to conquer a new country, and naturally he prayed to God to bless him and make him victorious. He said to God:

—I am nobody, only a servant, a servant of your servants. Bless me. I am carrying out your work, and this victory will be yours. But I am nobody, remember. I am merely a servant of your servants.

A priest was beside him, helping him pray, acting as an intermediary between him and God. Suddenly they heard another voice in the darkness. A beggar from the city was also praying, also saying to God:

—I am nobody, a servant of your servants.

The emperor said:

—Just look at this beggar! A beggar himself, and he is also telling God that he is nobody! Stop this nonsense! Who are you to say that you are nobody? I am nobody, and no one else can dispute that. I am the servant of God’s servants! Who are you to say that you are a servant of his servants?

You see? The competition continues as before—the same competition, the same foolishness. Nothing has changed. The same calculation: “I must be last. No one else must be allowed to be last.” The mind can go on playing such games with you if you do not possess great understanding, if you are not very wise.

“Instead of fatalistically obeying the dictates of karma, we must follow the inner path to freedom. Meditate daily. Strive for intimate communion with God. Heeding the quiet voice of intuition, learn from Him to rid yourselves of habits that are destructive to the soul. How long—how tragically long!—these habits have forced you to fear the future. If unexpected good fortune and misfortune bewilder you, seek the only solution to life’s endless mysteries—in deep meditation, as well as in an ever-deepening, unified rhythm with the wisdom apprehended through daily contact with the eternally free and infinite Spirit.”

“The human soul is not doomed to be good or evil. Although vice or virtue may sometimes seem innate, the soul acquires its tendencies independently, either in this life or in past lives. This is the result of its personal choice.”

“People with good karma have more opportunities in life, and therefore they should help those who have fewer opportunities.”

UNITY OF RELIGIONS

The religions professed by people may differ from one another, but they all lead to a single goal—to God.
Garments may differ, but the fabric is the same in all of them. Ornaments may be diverse, but the gold from which they are all made is one. Cows may be of different colors, but the milk of all of them is the same. Electric bulbs may have different wattages, sizes, and colors, but the electric current passing through them is one. Similarly, there are countless human beings, jivas, and animals, but the life force in all of them is the same. Realizing the principle of the unity of creation lies at the foundation of jnana-samatva—the knowledge of equanimity.

“The worldly path to developing Cosmic Consciousness is to love your family, your neighbors, your country, and the whole world as yourself. You are a king, and the subjects of the kingdom of your love are not only all people, but also animals, flowers, stars, and everything living. Love all men as your brothers, and all women as your sisters; all old men and old women as your parents; all people with black, brown, yellow, white, red, and olive-colored skin as your friends and brothers. This is the worldly path to realizing Cosmic Consciousness.”

To know Me through the book of one’s own experience is part of the destiny of humanity today. Each one of you must be saved. And each one will be saved. I will not leave you even if you avoid Me. I will not abandon even those who avoid Me. I have come for everyone. Those who keep their distance and those who have lost their way will also be brought closer and saved. Do not doubt this. I will draw them to Me and bless them.

God never turns away from anyone. No matter how much you have sinned, do not believe that your guilt is immeasurable and cannot be redeemed.

When the world writes you off, claiming that you are worth nothing, pause for a moment and think of the Divine Mother. Say to Her: “Divine Mother, I am Your child, Your wayward child. Please forgive me.”

By calling upon the maternal aspect of God, you meet no objections, for you melt the divine Heart. But God will not support you if you continue to behave unrighteously. When you pray, you must renounce harmful actions.

Paramahansa Yogananda, from the book “The Eternal Quest”

Excerpt from the book by V. I. Loshakov, "Notes of a Mountain Hermit"

- Sai Baba, some young Russian men and women aspire to move to wealthier countries. They supposedly expect to find happiness and prosperity there.

- Fools. They do not understand that being born in Russia is a great privilege. But they have the right to freedom of choice. By moving to other countries, such young men and women lose more than they gain, although materially they may be more successful than they would be in Russia.

- Sai Baba, allow me to ask you an impertinent question: What is your attitude toward Russia?

- It is one of the most precious pearls in my universal necklace. Russia has endured and continues to endure hardships that no other nation in the world could withstand. This speaks to the people's high spiritual potential. The harsh conditions of nature, ancient traditions—many of them forgotten but preserved in the subconscious memory—and the resilient character formed in Russians. This is a people that has always lived by its own labor, engaged in no plunder, and attacked no one. It is from here that the revival, the Golden Age on Earth, will begin. Together with India, it will become a spiritual leader for all countries and peoples.

- Forgive me, Sai Baba, but looking at today's market relations in Russia, it is somehow hard to believe that the Golden Age will begin precisely here.

- I have always known and know what will happen. Everything that happens in this and other worlds is part of My plan. And, of course, a person with an earthly level of consciousness is unable to understand this plan in all its detail and beauty. The market and market relations are also part of My plan. And I see how greed takes possession of people. They sink to an animal state, trying to satisfy their basest desires. Such people bring this world to the brink of self-destruction; morality degenerates. It is precisely at such a critical time for earthly beings that I incarnate. But not in order to save the world, for I could do that with a wave of My hand, without even incarnating. I incarnate each time Righteousness declines. I cast the veil of maya over My formless nature and assume the name and form that correspond to My task. When evil overcomes good, I come to protect the good. But I do not take a person by the hand and drag them forcibly toward a brighter future. My task is to show people the path to saving their world. The fact that people possess free will is also My play. And salvation or destruction of this world depends solely on their free choice. During My life on Earth, I sowed only seeds. But divine seeds bear divine fruit. My plan is perfect. So do not doubt that Russia will fulfill its mission. This depends, to no small extent, on you as well...

Namaste! Allow me to share my impression of a book that touched me deeply and seemed like a beacon on the Path. The book by Thomas and Olga de Hartmann, “Our Life with Mr. Gurdjieff.” It is a book by the Great Teacher’s closest students, in which they describe the ways the Teacher “shook up” their consciousness in order to awaken his students from sleep, as well as the unusual situations, difficulties, and immense daily work on themselves that filled the life of this married couple alongside the Teacher.
I was deeply impressed by the tremendous work Thomas and Olga accomplished on the Path to Awakening. The accounts of their life together with George Ivanovich and the other students at the Institute for the Development of the Human Being, founded by the Great Teacher, are especially interesting.

“Do not take life too seriously. Laugh and make others laugh.

Laughter is the best medicine for many ailments. It strengthens health, improves circulation, and lifts the spirit.

When you laugh wholeheartedly, you momentarily forget your worries and problems, and this clears the mind.

Remember, God is the embodiment of Ananda (Bliss), and laughter is an expression of this divine Ananda within you.

Seriousness often gives rise to tension and anxiety, while a light heart and a smile open the doors to divine grace.

Develop a sense of humor; look for the funny side of situations without hurting others. This will make your life easier and happier.”

The word “SAI” has a universal meaning that can be understood as transformation on three levels.
The letter “S” stands for transformation on the spiritual level;
“A” stands for social transformation;
“I” stands for transformation on the individual level.

Individual transformation is the foundation for the first two. This is the first step. But in our time, the word “individual” is understood incorrectly. We usually take only the human form into account and identify it with the individual. But who is an individual? An individual is one who expresses their Avyakta (unmanifest) Divinity through their conduct.

The hidden divine principle permeates the entire being of the individual from head to toe and is called conscience. The manifestation and demonstration of the presence of conscience is a defining characteristic of a human being.

But instead of manifesting the pure inner essence—the true “I”—people today display vicious qualities and harmful tendencies that belong to their external nature, that is, the body. Chaitanya (Divine Consciousness), present in hidden form in every human being, is true individuality. This consciousness must be directed along the right path.

Where can we find a true spiritual teacher whom we could acknowledge as our Guru? As the sacred festival of Guru Purnima approaches, Bhagawan gives us guidance.

Do not seek a Guru. Strengthen your faith in the Atma. Strive to enjoy the bliss of the Atma. Try to develop the conviction: “I am the Atma.” This is the true message. Once you realise this Truth, everything else becomes unnecessary. There are no restrictions of time, place or circumstances in coming to know this Guru. Changes in time exist only for a person immersed in the mind, who is bound by them. But for one who has transcended the limitations of time, everything remains unchanged. Such a spiritual state can be attained only through faith in the Atma. Guru Purnima is celebrated as a day honouring the Guru. Some gurus regard this day as an opportunity to earn income. They belong to the lower category. There is only one true Guru. He is the One, the God of gods, revered as father, mother, teacher, knowledge, wealth and everything else. He is the Supreme One whom you should seek through your sadhana. Only God can transform your spiritual efforts into transcendent experience.

— Divine Discourse, 7 July 1990

There is only one Guru—God—and there is no other Guru. Meditate on this Guru.

— BABA

From this excerpt, you will learn what it is like to be the girl with whom a young man was unrequitedly in love before taking his own life.
Before he could read one more of the manuscripts he had saved from the fire, a wondrous vision suddenly appeared before him; at least, everyone took it for a vision, but it was the shepherdess Marcela: she appeared on the summit of the mountain at whose foot the shepherds were digging a grave, and she was so beautiful that her beauty instantly eclipsed the splendor of its own glory. Those who saw her for the first time gazed at her in silent admiration, but even those who often had occasion to see her were no less astonished than those who had never seen her before. As for Ambrosio, scarcely had he seen her when, unable to restrain his indignation, he said:
“Why have you come here, you savage basilisk of the surrounding mountains? Is it to see whether, at your approach, blood will gush from the wounds of the wretch whose life your cruelty has taken? Is it to boast of the fruits of your wickedness and, like the cruel Nero [139], who watched burning Rome from above, admire them from the heights? Or is it to trample this cold corpse beneath your profane foot, like the ungrateful daughter of Tarquinius [140]? Speak quickly, then: why have you come, and what do you want from us? While he was alive, the thoughts of the deceased Chrysostom were directed toward you; after his death, the thoughts of those who call themselves his friends may easily be consumed by you.
“No, Ambrosio, that is not why I came here!” Marcela replied. “I came to justify myself and prove that those who blame me for Chrysostom’s death and for their own sorrows are wrong. Therefore, I ask everyone present to listen to me attentively—for in order for reasonable people to recognize the truth, I need not spend much time or waste many words. You yourselves claim that heaven endowed me with beauty, and that my beauty disarms you and compels you to love me; yet you express the wish, and even demand, that I should love you in return for your love. The natural understanding with which the Lord endowed me tells me that what is beautiful cannot be unloved, but surely the woman who is loved for her beauty is not obliged to love the one who loves her solely because she is loved? Now imagine that, in addition to being in love with beauty, the lover is ugly; and since everything ugly cannot help but inspire disgust, it would be very strange if he said: ‘I loved you for your beauty—so love me too, even though I am ugly.’ Let us even suppose that they are equally beautiful; that does not mean their desires are alike, for not every beauty possesses the power to make others fall in love with it—some delight the eye but do not conquer the heart. If every beauty inspired love and conquered hearts, our vague and uncertain desires would wander forever, never knowing where to settle, for if there are countless beautiful beings in the world, our desires would have to be countless as well. Yet I have heard that true feeling is indivisible and that one cannot love under compulsion. But if that is so—and I am convinced that it is—can I be required to surrender my heart by force merely because you swear that you love me? And if heaven, which made me beautiful, had made me ugly instead, tell me: would I have the right to reproach you for not loving me? Consider also that I did not choose my beauty: whatever it may be, it was given to me by heaven; I neither sought it nor chose it. And if a snake cannot be condemned for being venomous, since nature itself endowed it with the poison by which it kills, then neither am I guilty of having been born beautiful, for the beauty of an honest woman is like a distant flame or a sharp sword: whoever does not approach it is neither wounded nor scorched by it. Honor and virtue are the adornments of the soul, without which even the most beautiful body
sharp sword: whoever does not approach it is neither wounded nor scorched by it. Honor and virtue are the adornments of the soul, without which even the most beautiful body loses all its beauty. And if innocence is one of those virtues that so adorn the soul and body and lend them a special charm, must a girl who is loved for her beauty lose her innocence by yielding to the advances of a man who resorts to every kind of trick for his own pleasure in order to make her lose it? I was born free, and, to live freely, I chose the solitude of the valleys: the trees growing on the mountains are my companions, and the clear waters of the streams are my mirrors. To the trees and waters I entrust my thoughts and my beauty. I am a distant flame, a sword flashing from afar. Those whom my gaze has enchanted are disabused by my words. Desire is nourished by hope, and since I gave neither Chrysostom nor anyone else any hope, it is more reasonable to suppose that Chrysostom was brought to the grave by his own persistence, not by my cruelty. They may object that his intentions were honorable and that therefore I should have returned his affection. Well, I will tell you that when, on this very spot where they are now digging his grave, he revealed his noble desires to me, I replied that eternal solitude would be my lot, and that only the earth would enjoy the fruits of my chastity and the remains of my beauty. If, despite my dissuasion, he continued stubbornly and hopelessly to swim against the current, what is surprising in the fact that the wave of folly eventually swept him away? If I had held him back, I would have been false to my heart. If I had yielded to him, I would have betrayed my noblest aspiration and inclination. He refused to heed my dissuasion; he suffered shipwreck without being pursued—judge now whether I am to blame for his sufferings. Let the deceived complain, let the one lured by hope lament, let the one I summon hope, let the one I admit to my presence take pride; but let not the man whom I neither lured, deceived, summoned, nor admitted call me an inhuman murderess. Until now, heaven has not wished me to love anyone by the workings of fate, and you should not expect me to make a choice of my own. Let these words, which dispel every hope, serve henceforth as a warning to all who seek my favor; and if anyone dies because of me, know that he will not die of jealousy or humiliation, for one who loves no one can arouse jealousy in no one, and to disabuse someone is not to humiliate them. Whoever calls me a beast and a basilisk—let him withdraw from me as from a harmful and evil creature; whoever calls me merciless—let him not seek to please me; whoever calls me ungrateful—let him shun me; whoever calls me cruel—let him not pursue me, for this very beast and basilisk, this merciless, cruel, and ungrateful woman, will pursue no one, seek to please no one, remain aloof from all, and pursue no one. Chrysostom was destroyed by his mad passion and fiery temperament; what have my modest conduct and chastity to do with it? I preserve my honor in the company of trees—why, then, do those who want me to associate with people seek to rob me of it? You know that I possess my own wealth—I do not envy what belongs to others. My nature is freedom-loving, and I do not wish to submit to anyone. I love no one and bear hatred toward no one. I deceive no one and entice no one; I mock no one and court no one. The innocent talk of country girls and caring for goats are what I cherish. My dreams do not extend beyond the surrounding mountains, and if they do extend farther, it is only so that, following the path by which the soul yearns toward its homeland, I may contemplate the beauty of the heavens.
With these words, Marcela, without waiting for a reply, disappeared into the thicket of the nearby forest, leaving those present astonished both by her reason and by her beauty.
