One of the most beneficial forms of laughter for a spiritual person is the ability to laugh at oneself.
At one’s own grievances, small defeats, and the discrepancy between one’s high ideals and everyday weaknesses.

Such laughter is not mockery, but an expression of healthy self-awareness and freedom from pride.
It prevents the ego from becoming rigid, keeping you human and approachable.
It is a sign that you do not take yourself too seriously, understanding that the true "I" (Atman) is eternal and perfect, while everything else is a play.

Laugh at the transient imperfections of the personality—it purifies and lightens the path.

In the face of death, social status, pride, and power all disappear. Realizing this, strive day and night, with purity of body, mind, and spirit, to realize the Higher Self through service to all living beings. The body must be supported and preserved as a means to this end. But remember that you are not this body, and this body is not you. Tat Tvam Asi.
You are the indestructible Atma Tattva. You have this body precisely for the sake of the Atma Tattva, and therefore, in your aspiration to realize Parameshvara here and now, you must be ready at any moment to sacrifice this body. Use your power over the body to promote the welfare of the entire world. This body is merely an instrument, a tool bestowed by the Lord. Let it serve its intended purpose.

The sad state of humanity today is that people do not recognize their inner powers or develop a sense of reverence for them. They strive toward the external, being captivated by physical forms. It is necessary to understand the relationship between the material and the subtle. The remedy for all human troubles lies within each person. But people seek a remedy outside themselves. Here is a vivid example of what happens in the world. A snack bar and a pharmacy are next door to each other. When the snack-bar worker has a headache, he goes to the neighboring pharmacy for a headache tablet. When the pharmacy worker has a headache, he goes to the snack bar for a cup of coffee to cure it instead of taking his own tablet. In the same way, people today tend to ignore the Divinity within themselves, yet crave countless external objects. There is no need to go outside in search of the Divine. People should develop firm faith in the Divinity within themselves. All that is needed is to turn one’s attention inward in order to experience the Divinity within.
Sathya Sai Baba.

The attendant ladies immediately brought the checkers and prepared the tables for the game. And so a struggle began between the emperor and the dignitary, which turned into a real battle. Such a game is described in the book “Lankejing*”:
“In the art of playing checkers, strictness and caution are considered the most important qualities. The center of the board is considered the most important place for developing actions; the edges are the worst, and the corners are intermediate. This is a universally known law among checkers players. The law says: it is better to lose a checker than to lose the initiative. When striking to the left, look to the right; when attacking from behind, look ahead. For it happens that, while advancing, you find yourself behind, and, conversely, while retreating, you end up ahead. When two of your points are invulnerable, do not separate them. If all the pawns are inaccessible, do not join them. In width, the position should not be too sparse, but its density must not be too tight. Do not spare your checkers, and do not strive to keep them all intact. Sometimes victory is achieved by sacrificing them. Rather than moving to a safe or isolated square, strengthen the position of your checkers so that they can support one another. If the opponent is strong and your forces are insignificant, first ensure the safety of your checkers properly. When you are sufficiently strong, boldly deploy your power. Do not fight one who knows how to win; do not engage in battle with one skilled in forming positions. You will not be able to defeat one who fights well, nor will you throw into confusion one who knows how to endure defeat. For a game of checkers begins with the correct arrangement and ends in an astonishing victory. When the opponent is under no threat yet strengthens himself, this means that he intends to invade and break through your front. When someone pays no attention to small things and sacrifices them, this means that he has conceived something larger. One who places checkers on the board at random is helpless in strategy. Anyone who responds to the opponent’s blow without thinking through their own move condemns themselves to defeat.”
*“Lankengjing” — “The Book of the Rotten Axe Handle”
Let this be
A useful reminder:
Be cautious,
As though you were above an abyss.
And the following verse is said on this subject:
The board lies,
Like the earth.
The checkers’ movements—
Starry movements,
Like the world created
By Yin and Yang,
So perfect is their arrangement.
A separate move
Is barely noticed by us;
Suddenly the whole game
Proceeds more clearly and cleanly,
You laugh
And boast afterward,
Like youths from the Mountain
Of the Rotten Axe Handle.

When you embark on the path of service, your problems will gradually diminish. LOVE ALL, SERVE ALL. Do not consider people to be different. Develop the feeling that you and the other person are one. All humanity is one. What you see in the world is merely a reflection and an echo of the one reality. As soon as you understand this truth, you will attain peace. Only then will your mind gain stability and one-pointedness, and you will be able to study and work peacefully.

Yusuf Balasaguni, “Beneficial Knowledge”

Ogdülmish tells the elik about the nature of the mind

Ogdülmish said: “The Mind is a delight among delights,
Just in its deeds, and rich in goodness.

Though young, he is handsome in appearance,
And always good through his virtuous deeds.

He is pure and upright, moderate in his actions,
And faithful to good conduct in dealings with people.

Wherever he turns, grace is there,
And his speech bestows grace upon the lips.

He whose brow is bright is loved by all;
He benefits everyone who associates with him.

The mind sees from afar the road to blessings
And walks with firm steps toward necessary deeds.

He immediately explains what is unclear,
And untangles every knot at once.

To the right and left, forward and back—
He sees everything and gives each thing its time and order.

He catches what runs and seizes what flies,
Corrects what is damaged and restores what is broken.

The foolish man, lamenting the mind, grieves:
‘Without you I languish beneath the weight of offenses!’

Of your blessings nothing is granted to me,
And where there is no mind, the heart is dead!

The mind is a lamp in darkness and eyes for the blind;
To the body it is the soul, to the speechless it is speech!’

May the Lord’s mercy also be with me;
May I repay you with threefold payment!

I know that in service you are devoted and good;
Your diligence is a sign of faithful loyalty.

And only he becomes faithful in service
Who thinks of the ruler’s benefit.

Hear what the serving man said:
‘When the servant is diligent, the bek prospers.’

The bek is joyful, neither grieving nor sorrowful,
When his servants serve with diligence.

The diligent servant observes the bek’s will—
The bek straightens his shoulders, knowing no cares.

The servant will bear the burden of hardship—
The ruler’s paths toward prosperity will open.

If the ruler finds such a slave,
God has granted him a blessed destiny.

And all the beks who lived before throughout the universe
Passed their lives with that cherished dream!”

The people of the whole universe, happy and content,
Praised the elik with devout praise.

And people from other, distant lands
Cherished the aim of seeing him in their souls.

Days replaced days, and year followed year;
The elik ruled the people faithfully and justly.

The Elik’s Question to Ogdülmish

One day the elik said to Ogdülmish:
“Answer me wisely about what you have learned:

It is known that the body has seven members,*
Each of them has its own delight and purpose.

What delights the heart, what pleases the eyes,
And which of their benefits do I myself enjoy?”

The Elik’s Question to Ogdülmish

“I understand all this,” the elik said,
“But answer me another question.

I want to understand an important matter;
Think it over carefully and answer me sensibly.”

The Elik’s Answer to Ogdülmish

Ogdülmish said: “Illustrious elik!
Knowledge raises the glory of rulers:

Rulers are the stronghold of mind and learning;
What can the ignorance of servants relate?”

Questions are easy, but answers are difficult;
That is why the elik needs knowledge.

Thus it is easier for the elik, and harder for me;
Better, mighty one, take pity on me!”

The Elik’s Answer to Ogdülmish

“Your request,” said the elik, “is weightier—
To ask for help in a matter you do not understand.

Therefore, my question is a delight to you;
I have asked, so you must answer!”

Ogdülmish said: “Man of righteous rule!”

Therefore, my question is a delight to you;
I have asked, so you must answer!”

Ogdülmish’s Answer to the Elik

Ogdülmish said: “Man of righteous rule!
Listening is far better than speaking a word!

He who speaks enslaves his own soul;
He who listens tends his body through idleness.

Take to heart the counsel of an experienced man:
‘Silence your speech, and let your reason listen.’

By listening, people grow wise through sound thought;
By chattering, they grow foolish through thoughtless pride.

What must one be like to lead them,
To govern their affairs with honor and dignity,

So that both people and country may flourish,
And times may pass with good repute,

So that the treasury may grow rich in gold,
And enemies may be forced to bow their necks,

So that the mighty army may grow strong,
And law may be tested against learning,

So that the bek’s fame may spread throughout the universe,
And happiness may grow in an unbroken succession,

So that he may be joyful and his power ever stronger,
And rule the world until his death?”

Ogdülmish’s Answer to the Elik

“I have understood the truth of your words with my mind;
Their truth is like musk,” replied the elik.

And it is not without reason that beks are called ‘those who know’:
The beks are expected to know and understand everything!

To be wise and intelligent is a great support;
The wise and knowledgeable have many enemies.

Hear what an understanding man said—
An experienced man who knows every thought:

‘The bek must be vigilant and wise, then
Unexpected evil will not bring sudden disaster.

He must possess honorable virtues
To earn a good reputation forever!’

And understand that all who became great men
Attained fame through wisdom alone!

A worthy descendant in a worthy lineage,
A worthy man honored and seen by all.

The rank of beks is sacred; honor is due to them,
And they must bear this rank valiantly.

The people need brave leaders
Whose strength is great in great deeds.
Listen to the words of the bek of Ötüken;
He has been famed for wise speech since ancient times:

‘The people love a worthy ruler,
They love a truthful and wise sovereign—

One whose knowledge and intellect are good,
Who is generous, broad-minded, and kind of heart,’

Whose will is virtuous in everything,
A guardian of law, counsel, and truth!”

And the valiant bek is the people’s leader,
And his lineage is glorious—valor lives within it.

One must lead affairs with knowledge of their nature,
And boldly set them right with purpose and wisdom.

The people must be nurtured with knowledge;
Without knowledge, the mind cannot understand.

The bek must be righteous and caring,
And prudent in his concern for his descendants.

All who are sensitive at heart are always cautious:
A cautious heart makes deeds just.

But if the bek lacks truthfulness,
His countless deeds harm his subjects.

And it is a marvel of beauty when the bek is cautious:
He holds the reins of government securely.

Wisdom is needed to settle difficulties,
And knowledge is needed for the thoughts of rulers.

To govern affairs is the lot of the thoughtful;
Keep the foolish far from public business.

And know this: the heartless are like the blind;
And if there is no heart, reason is of no use!

Hear the saying of the ruler of rulers,
A restrained and experienced man, great-hearted:

‘Call only him who has gathered wisdom into his reason
A true man, without stinting praise.
He who is renowned for reason, wise, and learned—
Though poor, he is good; though small, he is not insignificant!’

Great is the blessing of reason for humankind;
Do not fear to praise the mind.

Carelessness and rashness bring disaster,
And haste brings disgrace upon a bek.

Haste, folly, and the swift anger of the proud—
These are all signs of the ignorant and foolish.

Haste is harmful like immature rawness:
Undercooked food brings illness!

Prefer composure and wisdom in affairs;
Hasten only to offer your prayer.

Under a vigilant bek, government is strong:
Enemies are restrained and bow their necks.

Where the bek establishes reliable law,
The country enjoys a time of blessed prosperity.

These two foundations frame authority:
Where these blessings exist, power is majestic.

Hear what the brave warrior said,
Whose wise will defeated the enemy:

‘O beks! You delight in the elik’s diligence—
May your own devotion be great as well.

The diligence of beks strengthens power;
Through their idleness, it is destined to fall!’

Be vigilant—subdue and watch your enemies;
Strengthen the law, and you will find peace.

Two things are dangerous to a bek’s power;
They have warped his path since ancient times.

These two evils are negligence and oppression;
Through both, the bek corrupts the people.

If you wish to subdue an enemy more securely,
Be cautious with both eye and ear.

The diligent bek crushes enemies;
The careless can never be a bek.

The vigilance of negligence is a hunter’s net:
There will be no victories for the careless!

Where there is vigilance, the enemy cannot approach;
And if he does, the bek will apply reason.

But violence and oppression cannot preserve power;
The people do not tolerate the violence of the strong.

Hear what wise speech proclaimed:
‘Even strength cannot overcome the people forever!’

And if a dog rules among lions,
The lions will acquire a dog’s nature!”

The bek must be kind and humble in spirit,
Humble in spirit and composed in conduct.

Where beks are generous, their fame is secure,
And where fame is secure, the country is impregnable.

To one whom an army constantly gathers,
Everything in the world is accessible with a valiant host.

Hear what a man said about his army:
‘Win booty—do not spare rewards!’

Feed and reward them, sparing no distinctions;
When gifts run out, ride forth again for booty.

The capable man’s treasury does not grow poor;
Among birds, the abundance of grain does not run out.

While a man bears weapons, he is brave and strong;
Why should he fear times without booty?”

The ruler of the whole world will acquire wealth:
With an army, a warrior will acquire riches!

To govern a country, one must nurture the army;
For the army, one must gather reliable revenue.

Revenue is good when the people are prosperous,
And people are rich when order is firm!

If one support falls, all supports may fall;
When four fall, authority collapses.

There are five more things forbidden to a ruler;
Without them, his name and fame are universal.

First, haste; second, greed;
Third, anger—keep far from them!

The fourth evil is stubborn obstinacy,
And the fifth: falsehood is immeasurably disgraceful!

Beks must avoid these evils;
Then nothing will threaten their greatness.

The bek is bright, while the common people are destined to be dark,
And white has no kinship with black.

Do you wish to be a worthy ruler?
Be valiant, O man of great honor!

But if the bek is dark as mortal sin,
He is the most vicious among the vicious.

A bek should be pleasing and well-proportioned,
And of medium height—how beautiful that is!

A pleasing appearance will be loved by all,
And everyone will admire him as one.

Let him crush enemies more boldly and fiercely,
Blinding the eyes of those who look upon him with his brilliance!

If height is excessive, it is unattractive;
And in shortness, beauty is even less to be found.

Thus medium height is the most harmonious:
He of medium height has a fine bearing.

Hear what the much-experienced man said,
The man who knew life’s troublesome hardships:

‘He who is small and ungainly is always irritated,
And anger has led to quarrels since time immemorial.’

Everything should be moderate—build and height;
Everything in due measure, O wise one—that is the law!”

The bek must shun wine and debauchery:
These two evils are the sure loss of happiness.

Where ruler-beks are fond of sweets,
The people suffer—their days are not sweet.

And if the ruler is drawn to games,
He will impoverish everyone and become poor himself.

If you neglect a task, no matter how hard you try,
You cannot catch a bird that has taken flight.

Hear what a learned man said to the wicked,
Rebuking a fool for his habit of drinking:

And this poem confirms these words;
See what meaning is hidden in them:

‘By whatever path the rulers proceed,
Along that same path the subjects walk.
And if the ruler is on a good path,
The subjects’ path is also good, not bad!’

And another thing: arrogance and conceit are vile;
He who is haughty has strayed from the righteous road.

All beks raised high by fortune
Cared for the people’s welfare without conceit.

Listen to what was said by a knowledgeable man,
A worthy man who understood everything:

‘All beks who loved boastful pride
Have known contempt, my son, to this day!’

Everything goes well with the humble;
No one can rise to heaven through arrogance and conceit.

Where there are arrogance and pride, the heart is like ice;
Humility gives greatness to the heart.

The bek must be modest and open-hearted,
Forgiving transgressions and harboring no resentment.

He who is compassionate at heart is faithful,
And the faithful are exemplary in service.

The ruler of the people needs diligence,
And truthful love for the people.

Through diligence and goodness one can attain fame,
And capture the desired prey in one’s nets.

He who lacks diligence is like a corpse;
He will receive no reward in either world.

Diligence is necessary for the good of government,
And authority of command is necessary for government.

The enemy is inactive when the sword is active,
But when the sword is sheathed, peace cannot be preserved.

O bek, honor those who wield the sword.
Everything will be in order, and trouble will not prevail!”
_________________________________

Ogdülmish said: “O illustrious elik!
The burden of governing the realm is heavy.

To rule the people is no easy task,
And there is no end to cares and hardships.

There is little delight, while troubles are harsh;
You will not receive praise—only reproaches in abundance.

Wherever you look, everything is fraught with danger.
You await joys, but alas, there are too few of them!

There are many opponents and few allies,
Many stubborn people and few who agree.

Dishonest and insincere people are everywhere without number,
And the people’s dishonesty is yet another concern.

Wherever you look, danger is at hand;
And where there is danger, affairs are joyless!

Hear what a man of supreme wisdom said,
A wise word shining like a pearl:

‘Even if a ruler had a head as large as a whole house,
Those firm in mind would not trust him.’

A ruler has more cares than he can bear,
And thousands of intrigues constantly surround him!”

Such are the cares with which the bek rules:
He savored bliss—now answer for it with your head!

If you care for life in this world and the next,
Then devote yourself with the greatest zeal:

Be truthful to God in heart and speech;
Pray, affirming God’s will in your deeds.

Whatever God commands, be ready to submit:
Service is the duty of faithful servants.

The Elik’s Question to Ogdülmish

“Yes,” said the elik, “your answer is just;
You have told everything, forgetting nothing.

But there is one more thing I wish to understand,
And answer my question openly.

Tell me: if the bek’s virtues are great,
What should the vizier be like beside the ruler?

Surely he must strengthen the treasury,
To care for the people, cities, and country,

Observe the laws and supervise everything,
And encourage the army with good care,

So that people may live without knowing evil,
And the ruler’s good fame may grow?”

What is the true adornment of a person, complementing their genuine worth? Bhagavan lovingly answers this question, reminding us of what is truly valuable in life.

Lotuses are the adornment of lakes. Houses and buildings are the adornment of villages and cities. The waves of the ocean are its adornment. The moon adorns the sky. Character is a person’s true adornment. The loss of this adornment is the source of all their suffering and misfortune. A person does not realize the purpose for which they were created by God. God’s creation is endowed with many truths, mysteries, and ideals. But people have forgotten these ideals. They are unable to appreciate the significance of their heritage. Of all the powers in the world, human power is the greatest. In fact, it is people who assess the value of all the precious things in the world. Who appraises a diamond or, for that matter, gold? Who appraises land? Is it not a person? People assign value to everything in this world, yet are unable to realize their own worth. How, then, can they comprehend the value of the divine? First and foremost, people must realize the value of human life. Only then will they be able to comprehend the divine. — Divine Discourse, January 1, 2000

Only virtues give human life its value, and it is qualities such as compassion, patience, and self-sacrifice that make it precious.
— BABA

“O Mother, Mother, Mother!
Words cannot express how much I love You.
My voice may be silent,
but my heart cries out to You—
with every beat, every breath, every thought.
You hide,
but I know that You are near.
When I close my eyes—
I feel Your breath upon my cheek.
Do not leave me.
I am a child lost in the forest of the world,
and only Your voice can lead me home.
I do not ask for miracles.
I ask only this:
may Your love
fill me to the brim.
When my heart grows weary,
may Your love become my breath.
When I forget You—
do not forget me.”

BIRTH AND DEATH IN GOD’S HANDS

Birth is the result of kama (desire, lust); death is the result of kala (time, a period of time). The god of desire, Kama, was reduced to ashes by Shiva. The god of time is Kala, or Yama. Shiva brought him under his control. Therefore, everyone must surrender themselves to Shiva (God) in order to avoid the frightening consequences of the actions of these two fatal forces. If, on the journey from desire to death, you take refuge in Rama, then you may remain untouched by the severity of Kama and Kala. Rama is the Atma, and the Atma has no kama (desire) and is invulnerable to kala (time).

Nature, both external and internal, is governed by the all-powerful Atma—the universal soul, Paramatma. Therefore, if you attain the grace of Paramatma, nature will become an obedient instrument in your hands. The body is nature; the breath of life is Paramatma. Living beings are frames moving across a screen; the screen, impervious to the emotions, raging flames, or roaring currents that flash across it, is Paramatma. Worldly people will be captivated by the frames, which, through illusion, seem to them like real events; the wise will focus their attention on the screen—pure, white, and smooth. When a little water is added to milk, it takes on the properties of milk. The same is true of nature: it seems to us capable of providing stability, joy, and peace, but in reality these are qualities of the Primordial Principle—Paramatma. Just as water has none of the qualities of milk, these qualities do not truly belong to nature. The legendary Hamsa (swan) possessed the ability to separate milk from water and drink only the milk. Likewise, a Paramahamsa (a realized person who has known the Truth) is able to separate illusion from reality and experience the bliss that comes only from Truth. Ramakrishna was a Paramahamsa; he knew how to separate milk (truth) from the water (untruth) added to it! When he suffered from throat cancer and could not swallow food, his disciples urged him to turn to Mother Kali with a prayer for healing; they felt that Kali would surely answer the prayer if Ramakrishna himself offered it. But Ramakrishna refused to ask God for such grace. He could not allow his attention to be distracted by such an insignificant desire. “Why pray? If it is Her will, it will happen; if not, that too is Her will”—such was his reply.

SANDEHA NIVARINI — DOUBTS RESOLVED
Chapter 1

Bhakta: What if the guru gives a mantra even though we have not deserved it?

Swami: Such a guru is not a guru. The consequences of his mistake will not fall upon you, but only upon him.

Bhakta: If a disciple fulfills the promises made to the guru, regardless of what kind of person the guru turns out to be, will he be able to attain his goal?

Swami: Of course—how could there be any doubt? Don't you know the story of Ekalavya? Although Dronacharya did not accept him as a disciple, Ekalavya placed an image of him in his home and worshipped it as though it were Dronacharya himself. Regarding it as such, he meanwhile practiced archery and attained complete mastery of the art. When the guru, blinded by injustice, demanded the thumb of his right hand, the disciple gladly agreed. Did Ekalavya take to heart the injury inflicted on him by his guru?

Bhakta: What was the use of this sacrifice? All his training became useless, that is all. What good was his skill now?

Swami: Although Ekalavya could no longer use his skill, he would never lose the character he had developed through his perseverance. Is the glory he gained through his sacrifice not sufficient reward?

Bhakta: Well, what is past is past. From now on I will remain steadfast and try not to give up the Name. Please give me upadesha!

Swami: You now resemble the man who, after watching a performance of the Ramayana that lasted all night, asked at dawn how Rama felt about Sita! I have already explained that the guru and upadesha will come to you when you are ready for them. It will happen by itself. There is no need to ask! In truth, a disciple should not ask for upadesha himself. He cannot know whether he is mature enough for it. The guru observes, waiting for the right moment; he himself will bless and help you. Upadesha should not be received more than once. It must be unique. If you reject one upadesha and accept another whenever you experience something similar, you will resemble a married woman who has strayed from the path.

Bhakta: Does that mean this is my destiny now? Is there no path to my salvation?

Swami: Repent for the mistakes you have made, but continue meditating on the Name you have received. For namasmarana, unlike japa, you may use as many names as you wish. In dhyana, however, you must use the one and only Name given with upadesha. Remember this; do not change the sacred Name. Transform yourself through persistent, focused efforts and actions.

Bhakta: Swami! Today is truly a great day! Thanks to your teachings, all doubts have disappeared. As you said, upadesha gave rise to doubts, and your sandesha dispelled them. With your permission, I am returning home now, and when I come again, I will bring doubts for you to dispel once more, giving peace and joy in return. If you agree, I will come next month.

Swami: Very good. That is exactly what I want: for a person like you to rid himself of doubts and gain a true understanding of the meaning of life; accepting sandesha with sincere faith and steadfastness, remain constantly mindful of the Lord's Name. Whenever and with whatever you come, I will teach you how to rid yourself of sorrow, doubt, and anxiety. Never allow suffering to overcome you, for with pain within, you will never be able to perform any sadhana. In that case, the sadhana you perform will be like rosewater poured onto ashes. Very good, now go and come again.

Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

EVERYTHING SHOULD BE DONE WITH JOY

If you do not add a drop of endorphin to your life, it will turn into a barrel of tar. But that same drop of joy will fill life with honey!

“JOY is the very nature of the Atma (the Divine ‘Self’). You came from joy, dwell in joy, and ultimately will merge with joy. Therefore, always strive to be joyful. Do not allow minor troubles to deprive you of this divine nature. A joyful person radiates positive energy, which has a beneficial effect on those around them and even on the environment. Sadness and despondency constrict the heart, while joy expands it, making it capable of embracing God. True spirituality is not serious faces and asceticism, but a state of lasting inner joy independent of external circumstances. Cultivate this inner joy through love, service, and remembrance of God.”

WONDERFUL STORIES ABOUT SAI ~ THE BANDIT’S FORGIVENESS AND THE ANSWER TO A SADHAKA’S PRAYERS

Bhagavan was giving His evening darshan, during which two people happened to be standing next to each other: one was an armed Chambal bandit, and the other was a practicing sadhaka. When Bhagavan approached them, the bandit stood up and handed a letter to Baba. After barely looking at the envelope, Baba threw it to the sadhaka. In the same way, Baba took the sadhaka’s letter and threw it to the bandit.

As soon as Baba entered the interview room, the bandit demanded that the sadhaka give him the letter. The sadhaka refused, saying, “This is Bhagavan Baba’s prasad for me.” A struggle broke out between them, and chaos ensued. The crowd intervened and persuaded the bandit to stop fighting. One of Baba’s old devotees took both envelopes and opened them. In the bandit’s envelope (which had originally belonged to the sadhaka), there was no letter, but there were 500 rupees. In the sadhaka’s envelope (which had initially belonged to the bandit), there was a sheet of paper on which he had written his letter, but the sheet was blank and all the questions had been erased.

The next day, they were again sitting in the same darshan line, and Baba came to them and said:

Baba said to the bandit: “You had faith in Me. On that sheet of paper, you described all your sins and said that if I accepted the letter, all your sins would be forgiven. The letter you gave Me came back to you blank. This means that I have forgiven your sins. Just as the letter was blank, begin your life with a clean slate.”

Baba said to the sadhaka: “You attended My darshans for 7 days. You ran out of money here. In your letter, you asked for some money to return home. What I gave you is enough to get home and have something to eat along the way.”

Both fell at Baba’s feet and returned home, firmly establishing Baba in their minds.

When you said “yes” to Me…

Swami: “When you said “yes” to Me, you gave up the right to be like everyone else. That is why you attract experiences that will purify you of what is not in harmony with your essence. Again and again, again and again, until I make you see that the past no longer works. I challenge you and tempt you with your past every day so that you may see that the past is the greatest delusion. When you said “yes” to Me, you gave Me your body, your thoughts, and your actions. When they do not correspond to the new you, the discomfort is unbearable. It will be this way every time, and when you fully realize this, then and only then will you completely relinquish your desires. For this is the only way a person learns. Very rarely does one learn through quiet reminders. A person’s desires and traps are created so that I can carry out My work. When you fully surrender, the temptations will disappear. I will never abandon you. Every mistake will become… More and more difficult to bear and increasingly difficult to heal. You will grow weary of your foolishness, because I love you, and although you were not fully aware of it, you said “Yes.”

There are many ways to transform human nature. One way is to bring the Divine, all-illumining Light of the Supreme into the system, expanding one's own vessel of receptivity. Before human nature is transformed, it is full of darkness. Darkness can be removed only by bringing in Light, and by nothing else. We need to consciously and constantly bring in the Light from above and then expand our receptivity. The more we expand our receptivity, the more Light we will be able to hold within ourselves.

MESSAGE OF LOVE

Before the arrival of each avatar, his helpers in carrying out the mission with which He comes into the world also appear—Mayashakti (the power of illusion) and Yogashakti (the power of yoga). Maya comes as an elder sister to “fan the flames” of the wicked; Yoga comes as an elder brother to inspire enthusiasm and ensure the unity of the “trinity.” In Krishna’s time, Maya drove Kamsa deeper and deeper into the abyss of vice, so that his downfall would be more terrible and “illustrative.” But now, in the Kali Yuga, wicked people await correction and transformation through the influence of love and compassion. For this reason, the avatar came unarmed. He brought with Him a message of love. The only weapon that can save low and sinful people is the Name of God, uttered with love.

How should we train the mind so that it becomes attached to noble thoughts and practices? Bhagavan lovingly explains this to us today, giving vivid examples!

The mind suffers from a false understanding of values and seeks to reject what is beneficial to it. A child must be taught to appreciate solid, chewy food that they initially dislike. Likewise, the mind must be trained to conceive of the vast, boundless, overwhelming greatness underlying time, space and causation. First, it must develop a taste for the Personal God, and then for the Impersonal, without name or form. All names and forms are attributed to the Impersonal God by the mind. Bhajan, dhyana, namasmarana, nagarasankirtan—all these are stages of this training. The bliss attained through merging with the Divine is the culmination. A sick person must swallow cough syrup themselves while they are ill, no matter how bitter the medicine may be! A person sick with ignorance and therefore suffering from egoism and discontent must take the medicine of japa-dhyana (repetition of the Name and meditation). The illness of excessive attachment to worldly objects can be cured only by the medicine of attachment to God, cultivated through japa and dhyana.
Divine Discourse, 22 November 1970.

At the next morning Darshan, I got into the second row and saved a seat behind me for my frуend. This is not usually allowed, and the sevadar, the person responsible for maintaining order, tried to prevent it, but I tactfully managed to hold on to the seat. “M” arrived half an hour before Darshan, when the first ten rows were already occupied, but, seeing me, he successfully made his way to me in the third row. During Darshan, Swami stopped as He passed us and waved His hand three times in our direction, looking at “M” and me. I was very happy about this, since any glance or sign of attention from Swami is very moving and pleasant for all of us. After Darshan, when we left the temple, my friend took me aside and excitedly began telling me that that night he had seen Swami in a dream and had spoken with Him for a long time. The dream was quite unusual: everything was clear, and he remembered it as vividly as if it had really happened. “M” was excited and confused; he did not understand whether it had been an ordinary dream inspired by what he had read, or something else that he could not explain.

Below I recount his account of the dialogue he had with Swami. Swami was sitting behind the lectern in the auditorium where “M” usually gave lectures to the audience, while he himself was sitting opposite Him at a table as a listener.

Swami said: “You wanted an interview—I will give it to you now. You liked that kind of class in which two lessons were combined into one (2 × 45 minutes) without a break; so here is your double lesson—ask your questions.”

“M”: “Everything in religions is confusing; they divide people.”

Swami: “All religions were written for times when people were primitive, and so they were presented in the language and concepts of that level. Blind faith and miracles were needed. Moses, for example, led the Jews out of Egypt and showed miracles. Each age needed its own form. Temples were built, but the temple should be in the soul. You did not want to read books about Me, but you studied mathematics: first 2 × 2, then more, and then physics. From the simple to the complex, but all knowledge leads to the highest knowledge—and that is God. Gradually you will move from intellect to spirituality; intellect is needed for life in the world.

You began reading in order to please a friend. Your friend is a guide; he brought you here selflessly. Do not worry about material things—you have a good intellect. Imagine that, on the cosmic scale of time, a person’s life lasts one hundredth of a second. What difference does it make whether you live in a palace or a hut?”

“M”: “Where can I find the strength?”

Swami: “If there is spiritual strength, physical strength is not so important. You are planning to go swimming in the sea (editor’s note: both friends had decided to do so), so go; otherwise, if you stay, you will regret it. Everything must be done sincerely; nothing should be done by force. You have good intellects, and you do not need to stay here for long. Decide for yourself.”

“M”: “How should I live now? Should I become a monk, perhaps, or develop a code of conduct?”

Swami: “If you put bread into a hungry person’s mouth, he will not learn to obtain bread for himself. It is impossible to construct a precise algorithm for your entire life. That is why you are given choices in life. I give you tests and see what choice you make, and you will pass or fail depending on that choice. If there were no choice, you would be slaves, and I do not need slaves. You must come to the spiritual path yourself; everything depends on you. Whatever you give, you must not expect gratitude for it.”

“M”: “What specific steps should I take to attain spirituality?”

Swami: “Take water, for example—it is the essence. You can pour it into a vessel; it may be served to you in a restaurant in a crystal glass, or poured into a golden goblet. But it is better to go to the source, the spring, and drink from it. The spring is in your soul. It has been forgotten; you must communicate with God yourself. What should you do? You must gradually change morally for the better. You have bad habits. Begin by getting rid of them. You have already become better; you have already overcome one habit: you have become less proud. Pride makes you blind. Alcohol dries out the brain, and that is the worst thing—it is an obstacle to God. Smoking dries out the body. This hinders development.”

“M”: “What next?”

Swami: “Act according to the criterion of truth. You may wash suppurating wounds, like Mother Teresa; you may help people, but if you take pride in it, everything is in vain. If you wish, bring knowledge of Me to people, but do not be a lecturer while doing so. Nothing can be done insincerely; you must not be lazy. Your wife is more spiritual; she is more compassionate. You still have the opportunity to come to Me; your paths in life are not yet finished.”

“M”: “Somehow I cannot believe it—whether it was a dream or not. Our group is waiting for the interview.”

Swami: “The more intelligent a person is, the less faith he has. There are no miracles in the world—there are only levels of knowledge. To make you believe, tomorrow morning at Darshan I will wave My hand three times like this” (and Swami showed what it would look like). “That is all; your double lesson is over.”

The next day, during the morning Darshan, as I wrote above, Swami confirmed that it had not been a dream by waving His hand three times. Swami repeatedly emphasized that no one can see Him in a dream without His will. Truly, one cannot help but marvel that Swami finds individual ways to help each person grow spiritually, depending on their level of intellect and their present state of spirituality; and by giving my friend such a remarkable interview, He once again expressed His love for him.

An excerpt from George Ivanovich Gurdjieff’s book *Meetings with Remarkable Men*, in which the author describes a special manner of communication between his father and his first teacher, Abbot Borsh.

“This manner—it became clearer to me somewhat later, when I understood its meaning—was an original means of developing the mind and achieving self-perfection.
...
One of them would unexpectedly ask the other some question, necessarily out of place, while the other was obliged to give a logical, appropriate answer quietly and seriously, without hesitation.
For example, one evening, when I was in my father’s workshop, my future teacher unexpectedly entered and asked us: ‘Where is God now?’
‘God?—my father replied quite seriously. He is in Sari-Kamysh now.’ (A wooded area with exceptionally tall pine trees.)
Having received this answer, the abbot asked: ‘And what is God doing there?’
My father replied that God was making ladders for himself there, fastening happiness to the tops so that people—both individuals and entire nations—could climb up and reach it.
Both the questions and the answers sounded utterly serious, without the slightest hint of a smile, as though the conversation were about the price of tomatoes: one asked what prospects there were for the harvest, and the other replied that the prospects were not bright. Only much later did I understand what profound meaning lay hidden behind these questions and answers.
They often conversed in this manner, so that a stranger who happened to overhear them might have thought that two old men had long since lost their minds and had escaped the madhouse only by mistake.”
