The Chinese New Year in 2022 will begin on February 1.
Unlike its European counterpart, Chinese New Year has been celebrated for many millennia—at least 4,000–5,000 years.
The date of the Chinese New Year is determined by the lunar calendar: the holiday falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice on December 21. Thus, each time the New Year in China falls on different dates in the Gregorian calendar familiar to us, between January 21 and February 20.
Chinese New Year tradition includes certain auspicious activities that are beneficial to carry out on the eve of the holiday and for at least several days afterward.
It is customary to welcome it dressed in red.
The seventh day of the holiday, like the second, is traditionally begun with prayer and reverence for God.
According to tradition, on New Year's Eve people do not sleep and stay awake until morning so as not to miss their good fortune. If someone does lie down to rest on New Year's Eve, they should get up early. There is a popular saying: "If you get up early on New Year's Day, you will become rich early too."

What not to do
- During the New Year celebration and feast, it is not customary to talk about the year that has passed—all thoughts and conversations should be directed toward the future.
- A festive outfit should not combine black and white.
- The number "4" is also a symbol of death, so it should not appear anywhere—not on a gift or in money, and the number of banknotes should be either greater or smaller.
- During the first three days of Chinese New Year, the house must not be cleaned. During the New Year, benevolent deities appear in every home, bringing happiness and good fortune that settle in the form of dust.
- Usually, after Chinese New Year begins, one should not buy shoes, so as not to invite trouble.
- Hair should also not be cut during the first month.
- Washing your hair during the New Year holidays means washing away your good fortune.
- Do not quarrel, argue, bicker, shout, or use profanity.
- Lending money. You must return all the money you have borrowed.
- And one more taboo—gloominess. It is a mortal sin during the holiday. Keep a positive attitude, allow yourself a little indulgence, have fun, laugh, and rejoice in what you have. Surely, fate will give you something pleasant in the near future.
