A Parable About a Vedic King​

One day, the king's enemies spread a rumor throughout the land that he was treacherous, greedy, and oppressed his subjects.
The next morning, the Vizier came to the king and, apologizing, told him the news.

The king thought for a moment and said:
- It's all right. You don't need to apologize. And there's nothing you need to do. Let's see what happens next.

A month later, the Vizier came again and said proudly:
- O, farsighted King! Your enemies were hanged because no one believed them.

The meaning of the parable is simple: just continue being a good king. Don't waste time trying to prove it to everyone.

One day, a Man pleaded with God:

- My Creator, help me get rid of my worries! I worry all day long. Sometimes about work, sometimes about my family and children, sometimes about my life...

- My Son, - said the Creator, - here is a remedy for all worries:
Get up early and do all the household chores. Then wash and pray to Me. After that, read books that will tell you something new and useful. That will take up a quarter of the day.
Afterward, go to people, or let them come to you. And help them. In whatever way you can. With whatever you can.
That will take up the second quarter of the day.
Devote the third quarter of the day to work. Earn money to support yourself and your family.
When you come home from work tired, spend time with your loved ones. Be with them. Give them your love, overcoming your fatigue.
Thus, the final quarter will be completed.

The Creator fell silent.

- But where is the remedy for worries here? - the Man pleaded again.

Then the Creator replied:

- If you do exactly as I have told you, you will have no time left for worries.

- I have come to you from the world of people. All our books say that we are Gods, that we can work magic with our thoughts, that we can do anything. But why can’t we accomplish anything?

We repeat the very same magic words given to us by the great Wizards who come to us. We do everything exactly as they do.

But nothing works.

- Yes, that is so. You can do everything, just like Gods. With these words, the Wizard led the young man to a huge stone lying in the middle of the road and said:

- Repeat the magic words you know to move this stone.

The young man focused and uttered the cherished words:

- Stone! Move out of the way!

But nothing happened. The stone remained where it was.

- You see? the young man said irritably.

The Wizard immediately said the same thing:

- Stone! Move out of the way! And the stone magically rolled off the road, as though drawn by some incredibly powerful force.

- But how? the astonished young man exclaimed.

- Not how, but why! That is what matters in magic, the Wizard said. You people pay too much attention to how it happens.

But we devote all our attention to why it is done. This stone was obstructing people, and I wanted to help them. That is why the magic worked. I did not care how the stone would disappear from the road. I was doing it for the people.

This parable feels like a view from Through the Looking-Glass, because everywhere people say the opposite: that we are reflections, and if the people around us are angry and aggressive, it means that I am the cause—that these people are mirroring me, and that I need to look for the cause within myself! But here it turns out to be the opposite: seeing me, people hate me because they cannot be the same, and this makes them angry! In principle, this understanding is closer to me; I have always seen it more or less this way, but I probably had some doubts because all sources always said the opposite—look for the problems within yourself! Well, in principle, yes: if my kindness causes anger and aggression in other people, then the cause lies within me—and that is my kindness and love .

Thank you, Om Shanti, for the instructive parable. More than once I have reflected on the feedback received in response. What is kindness? True kindness, which is mistaken for weakness and attacked or hurt because it is foreign to the other person? Or imagined kindness, its idealization—the desire to preserve a bad peace, avoid confrontation, and remain indifferent, “unfeeling”? And then our counterpart, like a teacher on our path, draws attention to—or helps us understand—that I am not quite so kind, or that there is fear (pain) within me when it comes to interacting openly…

In each case, either our own triggers or those of our interlocutor are signaling. A trigger is not an enemy, but a signal to listen to yourself, an indicator of where pain remains within us. With sufficient inner work, we become freer in our relationships with others and ourselves. Thank you!

OM Shanti, thank you for the parable.
If I may, I would like to comment on what came to me after the feelings I experienced while reading it.
This parable is not about food as an everyday ritual, but about levels of being and consciousness. For some, God is a concept of the mind; for others, He is a living reality with whom a relationship is possible, through service and the offering of that very food. I will never forget how I practiced manas puja to Shiva every morning for a long time. At the same time, I firmly believed and felt that all the offerings were real and that they were truly accepted. I sensed that Shiva was always pleased when I offered Him something new to eat. I understand it this way: God accepts the intention, love, and awareness. If an offering is made without awareness and presence, then of course it is simply food; but if one is fully present in this process, then in this silence one can sense a sacred connection in the offering. It is as if you are within this Divine field. That is why the Guru does not even try to persuade his disciples otherwise. He conveys to each person the language of truth appropriate to them.

For some, God is a concept of the mind; for others, He is a living reality with whom a relationship is possible, through service and the offering of that very food. I will never forget how I practiced manas puja to Shiva every morning for a long time. At the same time, I firmly believed and felt that all the offerings were real and that they were truly accepted. I sensed that Shiva was always pleased when I offered Him something new to eat. I understand it this way: God accepts the intention, love, and awareness. If an offering is made without awareness and presence, then of course it is simply food; but if one is fully present in this process, then in this silence one can sense a sacred connection in the offering. It is as if you are within this Divine field. That is why the Guru does not even try to persuade his disciples otherwise. He conveys to each person the language of truth appropriate to them.</div>

“Holy one, you know everything. Tell me: I have been meditating for a long time, renounced the joys of this world, seek the truth, read many books, visited many holy places, and received many blessings from many saints, yet I have not become Enlightened. How can I know whether I am already close to the end of the Path? Or do I still have a long Path ahead of me?”

The sage looked tenderly at the monk and said:

“How do you know that spring has arrived?”

“By the blooming flowers,” the monk replied.

“And how many flowers do you need to see to understand this?”

“Well, one petal from a single flower is enough.”

“You are right. Just one petal is enough to understand that spring has already arrived.
